Cryotherapy (ice application)

Without exception, any time we have tissues that have been overstretched we have a strain/sprain injury. This causes a very specific response involving a period of acute active swelling. This period of time last from 12-72 hours typically. The application of ice is extremely important and beneficial in reducing the amount of and length of time the inflammatory stage occurs.
Typically, 10 minutes on and 30 minutes off, repeatedly, has the best result during this acute stage of injury.
